Cape Town Lady
2024
In 2018, Steve and I spent a few days in Cape Town before travelling to Kruger National Park where we enjoyed two safaris. While in Cape Town we visited the Bo-Kaap district with its famously colourful houses, and I couldn’t help but notice this woman looking down – perhaps disdainfully – or with a sense of superior indifference on the tourists walking along her street. The contrast between the seeming ordinariness of the woman having a cuppa and a smoke – perhaps a break from her morning domestic tasks - and the artificiality of the tourists on the street appealed to me. This feeling was intensified by my awareness of the city’s torrid apartheid history, which she no doubt had experienced.
